The University of British Columbia Division of Cardiovascular Surgery is a clinical division within the Department of Surgery dedicated to the field of Cardiac and Great Vessel Surgery. There are 21 academic members situated at three teaching hospitals and one regional hospital. The division also has a Royal College approved training program in Cardiac Surgery.
Research interests include:
- myocardial protection
- thoracic organ transplantation
- the electronic medical record
- online data collection
- regional quality appraisal
- the development and follow-up of prosthetic devices, including: vascular grafts, heart valves, pacemakers, defibrillators, lead/electrodes
Education
The division provides undergraduate training to medical students and postgraduate training to candidates who have completed general surgical Fellowship or Board level training. Optimally, general surgical and cardiovascular and thoracic surgical training are integrated to provide maximum efficiency to the trainee and optimal utilization of hospital and training resources.
The Royal College has also outlined a six-year training program in Cardiovascular Surgery, but our intention is to offer this only to exceptional candidates whose future focus will emphasize research, administration and/or teaching rather than strictly clinical care.
